The tourist information about Lanzarote we wanted to have before traveling there.

Paddleboarding (SUP) in Lanzarote

Paddleboarding started to be really popular two or three years back in Europe. Everyone knows surfing in waves which is really cool. However, it looks quite demanding and is not for everyone. If you want to have new sea experience, I recommend paddleboarding. This sport is suitable for everyone who is not afraid of water.

What does it mean “SUP”?

If you want to read something about paddleboarding you will encounter with the abbreviation SUP which stands for Stand-Up-Paddleboarding (no pun intended :-))

People used something like paddleboard to move between islands in Pacific in the past. It might have been the origin of paddleboarding.

How to start paddle-boarding

There many options to start paddle boarding in Lanzarote. You can rent the paddleboard and try it by yourself. The paddleboard rentals are in resorts such as Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Famara as well as in the capital Arrecife where is a paddleboard rental near Playa del Reducto.

If you want to learn SUP properly, I recommend the course with the instructor. The course takes 2 – 3 hours and you learn the right standing on the board, the movements with the paddle, to turn with paddleboard or what to do when the wind blows. The beginner courses are usually held in calm waters or lagoons.

For more advanced paddleboarders there are courses outside of lagoons. You are on the open sea and you have to be aware of tides, waves and wind.

SUP Trips

The SUP schools organize sup excursion for the advanced paddleboarders. You can explore Charco de San Ginés in Arrecife from your board. The tour starts in Playa del Reducto and you paddle through the small harbour to the lagoon in the city center.

Other trip on paddleboard takes place along the Playa Blanca and its neighbourhood. Or you can explore the Papagayo beaches on paddleboard. Go on excursion from Playa las Coloradas to Playa Mujeres

Isn’t there a SUP school near your accommodation? There are many SUP schools which also offer the transport to the beach where the course takes place, or where the SUP trip starts.
